Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?
Work ain't honest but it pays the bills
What we gonna do when they come for you?
Gave me the life that I came to live

Do I really
Want my baby?
Brother tell me what to do
I know you got to get your hustle on
So I pray
I understand the game, sometimes
And I love you strong, but

What you gonna do when they come for you?
Work ain't honest but it pays the bills
What we gonna do when they come for you?
God I can't stand life withoutcha

Now, me and baby got this situation
See brotha got this complex occupation
And it ain't that he don't have education
'Cause I was right there at his graduation

Now, I ain't sayin' that this life don't work
But it's me and baby that he hurts
'Cause I tell him right
He thinks I'm wrong
But I love him strong

He gave me the life that I came to live
Gave me the song that I came to give
Pressure on me
But the seed had grown
I can't make it on my own
Summer came around and the flowers bloomed
He became the sun
I became the moon
Precious gifts that we both received
Or could this be make believe?

Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?
Work ain't honest but it pays the bills
What we gonna do when they come for you?
Gave me the life that I came to live

Don't you worry, I know there's confusion
God's gonna see us through
Peace out to revolution
But we paid though

Don't you worry, I know there's confusion
The work ain't honest but it pays the bills
Don't you worry
Gave me the life that I came to live
Don't you worry
The work ain't honest but it pays the bills
Don't you worry

This song means that if you are in the drug business you should get out, because it not only hurts your customers, but it hurts those who are close to you. Suppose youe get caught and go to jail, or get shot, and killed...your loved ones will have to deal with all the hurt and pain that cames with that. That is what the other side of the game is...the bad hurtful side, not all the cars, and money, and jewelry.

it's about being pregnant with a child and even considering abortion (do i really want my baby? / brother tell me what to do) having a baby by a man you truly love but he's somehow involved with some dirty jobs, maybe drug dealing, and so she's worried if he's gonna be alright cos she needs him for their child. so she's trying to make him quit his games (see i ain't tryin to run your life, i just want you to do what's right) she wants her man to take responsability cos now there are three of them (me you and the baby)a great song one of my favorites

I love this song and I wish a lot of people I know would listen to this song. This reminds me of an ex. I didn't know him for too long, but I just worried about where his life was going and what he was doing to his family. So sad.

I always misunderstood the lyric "work ain't honest but it pays the bills." I always thought she meant work in general isn't honest, but she means his work specifically (hustling, drug dealing, whatever). I always thought she was talking about blue collar work and she meant it's not honest because he works hard and has nothing to show for it. You can tell I didn't really pay attention to this song at first! I feel like a dummy because the song is really straight forward when I look at it now.

same here i thought that 'work' meant those crappy jobs that desperate ppl revert to like for example a cleaning job - the jobs that require hard labour with crappy pay. but since u mention it it makes perfect sense, esp. when i saw the lines 'Precious gifts that we both received, Or could this be make believe'.Kinda reminds me of American Gangster.

actually when you get to understand what type of artist erykah badu is, you realise that the song is actually about her job in the music industry. She says 'what you gonna do when THEY come for you'. Who is they? 'They'represent those peopl in the industry that want you to sell out and sing about things that dont uplift or give people confidence or faith in God. also she says 'Work ain't honest but it pays the bills' which means in the industry you put up with alot of bs with people telling you what to do and if you listen to tadays music even neo soul is morally corrupt. THis means that she may have sold out because the money or 'gifts' provided her with stability and the ability to take care of her and her son. However she goes on to say 'God I can't stand life without ya' which means she would rather be on God's side. Now 'brotha' im not as sure but i think he is the product of todays hip hop, because he is an educated man but he lives a life that isnt right in the eyes of god and erykah tries to tell him that but he is hard headed but she still loves him because thats her brotha in terms of ethnicity

and finally 'precious gifts... could it be make believe' basically saying is this fame/money long lasting of does it all fade; is it worth it.

    • i have to add that she says 'peace out revolution...but we paid tho' meaning that these artists sell out to keep you from learning about whats goin on around you [politically] but they are being VERY well paid for this..... peace and love everyone

Love in a Vacuum 'Til Tuesday Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in "There was a timeyou opened up every doorwayyou didn't mind if everythingwasn't your way"then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else,"Don't pull awaythat goes against what you told meI look in your eyes I realize what you've sold meis love in a vacuum"so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it,"I think you've changedbut you insist thatthat's not true"quite possibly they are an addict of some sort, my guess would be cocaine, &/or showing very obsessive behavior towards you (early on in the video for this song we see the man hanging a picture up, it is a very large portrait of Aimee & it is prominently displayed in his/their apartment for the duration of the song), thus their "love in a vacuum","You look so strange, so distantthat you're hardly youNow I can seehow you have been acting differentYou say it's mebut I knowthat it isn'tit's love in a vacuum"but still you are in love with them and don't want to leave them and you know that they are truly in love with you and they don't want you to leave them either, maybe they are convinced you can save them from themself, maybe they are so broken that the possibility of an overdose &/or suicide attempt is very real and you want to get through to them that their behavior not only dangerous but it is also just pissing you off and if they don't wise up they run the risk of loosing you, as in the lines"You will be lonelyif you leave me alone", so you want to save them but can't get through to them due to the addiction &/or emotional problems they have, "Love in a vacuumand that's not enoughlove in a vacuumYou will be lonelyyou'll be the only one who feels this wayYou will be lonelyif you leave me alone You will be lonelyyou'll be the only one who feels this wayit's just not enough"you want them to understand that the love they are giving you is not enough when it is filtered through the vacuum of their drug addiction &/or emotional impairment, "You will be lonelyyou'll be the only one who feels this wayit's just not enoughand just waityou will be lonelyLove in a vacuumLove in a vacuum and that's not enoughLove in a vacuum".'Love In A Vacuum' for me is a hauntingly truthful acute argument on the loneliness of obsession and almost inevitable loss of love that follows people who are broken in some way or another; the obsessives, the co*ke heads, the drunks, addicts or the just-plain-old emotionally broken; a razor sharp, lyrically driven, deceptively poppy, yet ultimately-depressing-in-the-best-way song. Quintessential Aimee Mann. Siberian Kiss Glassjaw its amazing how far music can come.. 24 years after it released and its one of the most heartfelt songs ive heard Step Ministry Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; Mountain Song Jane's Addiction Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it.""There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
