- Highs Decent handling, high-quality interior, generous cargo room.
- Lows Lacks hot-hatch performance, desirable features only come in expensive packages, due for an update.
- Verdict The Elantra GT stands out with an attractive base price, quality interior, and practical storage, but its performance fails to live up to the GT moniker.
Overview
The Elantra GT is a compact four-door hatchback, based on the European-market Hyundai i30. Compared to the Elantra sedan, it is nine inches shorter on a two-inch shorter wheelbase, and it competes directly with the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. The GT is the sportiest of the Elantra line, with a stiffer body structure and a sport-oriented suspension, and it’s available with automatic or manual transmissions. The current-generation Elantra GT launched in the 2013 model year, with a mid-cycle refresh for 2016 that included a new front fascia, prominent hexagonal grille and a new wheel design. While it's held up fairly well, the Elantra GT is definitely due for a significant update, which is scheduled for next year.
What's New for 2017?
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra sedan was all-new, but the GT hatchback carried over with just a few upgrades for the model year. The optional infotainment system adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and a new Value Edition package includes such features as leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a new optional 17-inch wheel design, smart-key with push-button ignition, fog lamps, and automatic headlamps.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The only engine available is a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder that powers the Elantra GT’s front wheels via either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine is rated at 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque, good for a class-competitive 8.1-second 0-60 mph time. Taking 180 feet to stop from 70 to 0 mph, the GT's braking is a bit on the long side for such a small car, and handling is, at best, decent for a compact with Sachs monotube rear dampers and a bigger (than on the sedan) rear anti-roll bar. The Elantra GT provides the sort of low-speed small-car fun expected of such a package, but despite the name it should not be mistaken for a “hot hatch.”

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Typical of Hyundais, the Elantra GT has a long list of available comfort and convenience features, though package prices can quickly inflate the low base sticker price. For example, Hyundai’s BlueLink infotainment system and vented front seats are only available as part of the GT’s Tech package. The interior is attractive and high quality, with standard heated mirrors and front seats, cruise control, and air conditioning that also cools the glovebox. There’s the expected 60/40-folding rear seatback and a shallow storage bin under the cargo floor. Cargo space is 23.0 cubic feet with the rear seat upright, and a generous 51.0 with both sides lowered.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Standard tech features for the Elantra GT include Bluetooth connectivity, a six-speaker stereo with satellite radio, USB port, and auxiliary input. But a 7.0-inch touchscreen, which also adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, is optional at extra cost.
